Dwyer was asked to assist the SUNY Upstate University Hospital, Community Campus in refreshing two inpatient units using the hospital’s construction crew in 2013. It soon became clear that the Maternity Unit needed more than just finishes upgrades in order to increase patient and staff satisfaction and attract new families. Under a term contract, the Dwyer team completed the programming and planning study for the expansion and renovation of the second floor Maternity and Nursery Units, and was later selected to complete the renovation of the 20,700 GSF space.

An interactive visioning session was held with stakeholders and decision makers to explore current trends in women’s healthcare design with regard to materials, colors, amenities and features providing the design team direction with regard to finish selections and design preferences. The finishes also correlate to the existing adjacent Labor and Delivery Unit with close attention paid to the new Visitor Lounge and Family Waiting Room. The entire project was abated and constructed over the course of many phases, all while maintaining an operating Maternity Unit and Nursery.
