College of Nursing Student Center Renovation

St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center | Syracuse, NY

Dwyer was retained to design a new Student Collaboration Suite on the 6th floor of the College of Nursing which  was formerly a convent.

As many of the students are commuters, having an accessible, comfortable resource center with modern amenities and flexible spaces was missing in the College’s program. Dwyer worked closely with the students as well as the furniture vendor to design the best space to suit their needs. By listening to the students to explore ways they like to work, the team was able to create flexible group study rooms with both lounge style soft seating, as well as a conference room options with tables and chairs to accommodate various types of group study. In addition, group rooms featured modern equipment and full height dry erase walls to enhance collaboration.

This project came with budget and schedule constraints, therefore, the general contractor was brought on board at project kickoff. This Design-Build delivery style allowed for fast track construction of the space allowing students to utilize their new Student Center by the start of the upcoming spring semester. The interior renovation included flexible student centered collaboration spaces with six testing rooms, seven private group study rooms as well as a large conference room, quiet lounge, and a spacious student lounge with a kitchen.
